ELEVEN | STRATEGIC PRIORITY ONE
EVENTS THAT MEAN BUSINESS
Employers have a major presence at DCG, not least
through regular events which expose students to a
vast range of sectors.
Insight into Industry days – where organisations
promote work experience opportunities and career
pathways – are important 昀椀xtures on the DCG
calendar.
Meanwhile, a Diversityin2Engineering event – aimed
at underrepresented sections of the community –
was organised at the Roundhouse in conjunction
with the City Council. It featured 24 employer
stands, guest speakers and practical workshops.
Some 500 live vacancies were promoted to over 700
visitors, including students from DCG, the University
of Derby and local schools as well as the general
public.
GET HIRED IS JUST THE JOB
Charlotte Carter embarked on a Healthcare
Assistant apprenticeship after meeting her
new employers at a Get Hired jobs fair. Staff
from Coxbench Hall residential care home were
instantly impressed by her friendly personality
and willingness to learn, offering her an
interview the following week.
Similarly, Get Hired events enable employers
to highlight their latest job and apprenticeship
vacancies. These occasions have attracted names
such as Reed, the YMCA, GXO Logistics, Thompson
Tree Surgery, SOCOTEC, FP McCann, Loram UK,
Tracsis and the NHS. Students prepare beforehand
with sessions on improving their CVs and interview
etiquette. Some go on to have mock interviews, with
employers giving them useful feedback.
Coxbench Hall Director Sarah Ballin said: “We
attended the jobs fair as we needed to recruit
and wanted to try something a little different.
We are really glad we did as we got three
members of the team from it. Everyone we
interviewed was successful.”
Sector-speci昀椀c employer events are equally
popular. A showcase for rail industry careers
featured presentations from the likes of Network
Rail, Atkins, Aegis and EMR. It shed light on career
choices in the industry which extend far beyond
traditional engineering roles.
With recruitment for health and social care
positions proving particularly challenging, DCG also
hosted a Joined Up Careers event with employers
such as Avanti Healthcare, University Hospitals of
Derby and Burton NHS Trust, Derbyshire County
Community Trust and Ashmere Derbyshire.
Charlotte, who previously studied Animal Care
at Broom昀椀eld Hall, is profoundly deaf and has a
cochlear implant. She commented: “It was my
昀椀rst interview and I was terri昀椀ed but I was over
the moon to be offered the job.”
