THE GENDER PINT GAP: REVISITED/WORKING IN THE INDUSTRY
Commentary and Opportunities
Does a lack of representation in the brewing industry drive
consumer perspectives and behaviour about beer?
“Female representation in the industry has been significantly lower
than in other sectors. In 2020, the British Beer & Pub Association
(BBPA) released a report showing that women make up only 22% of
the beer and pub sector’s workforce. The report also found that
women are underrepresented in senior positions, with only 17% of
board members and 7% of CEOs being women.”

For balance, we analysed whether this is specific to the beer industry
or symptomatic of the wider issue around female recruitment in the
STEM sector (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).
How do we compare to STEM female averages in the wider sector?
Brewing is a science discipline. Women science professionals make up
46% of the workforce in this discipline but the 2023 SIBA craft beer
report states only 3% of women are in brewing roles, which means the
sector is lagging behind in recruiting, retaining, and promoting
women into these roles.

SIBA Craft Beer Report 2023
The key standouts about women
working in the craft beer industry
are opposite.
We decided to drill down a little
further into these statistics and
discovered the following:
In the breweries with only one person employed as a brewer, it
was nearly 6 times more likely to be a man than a woman.
Where only one person is employed in a management
position, it was almost twice as likely to be a man rather than a
woman.
But in full time marketing or social media roles, there was a lot
more equity between men and women.
The Opportunity
The Opportunity
“We need to talk and promote
the brewing and hospitality
sector more to encourage
wider diversity. Young people
at school and university aren’t
always aware of the diverse
nature of the roles available.”
“Women need to be able to
picture themselves in roles
like mine from an earlier
age…there aren’t enough
faces out there for them to
identify with.”
