Entrants should send their answer, including name, place of work and contact
details to Caroline Anderson (canderson@leiths-group.co.uk) by Friday,

• Defibrillators can be used (if available) when someone goes into cardiac arrest.
• A heart attack is when the supply of blood to a part of the heart stops, causing a
part of the heart muscle to die.
• A cardiac arrest is when the heart, as a result of an electrical failure, stops beating
completely.
• For cardiac arrest, the only intervention which can restore a normal heartbeat is
an electrical counter shock or defibrillation.
• A person should receive such treatment within a matter of minutes to increase
the patient’s outcome. Every minute without CPR and defibrillation reduces
a victim’s survival rate by 7 to 10%. If a defibrillator is used within 3-5 minutes
of cardiac arrest, survival rates jump from 6% to 74%.
Good Luck!
