TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT –
Foundation Apprentices
LEITHS ARE PLEASED TO BE SUPPORTING TWO PUPILS FROM PORTLETHEN ACADEMY WHO ARE
WORKING TOWARDS GAINING THEIR FOUNDATION APPRENTICE (FA) IN BUSINESS SKILLS.
THE FA QUALIFICATION IS THE SAME LEVEL AS A ‘HIGHER’ AND ACCEPTED BY MOST UNIVERSITIES
AND COLLEGES AS AN A OR B, OR IN SOME CASES AS TWO HIGHERS.
Luke Scotson and Kyan Truman commenced on their journey in September 2023 and will work through until the end of March 2024.
The apprenticeship involves working one half day per week in the head office at Cove. Luke is attached to the HR Department and Kyan to the Civil Engineering
and Surfacing Department. Throughout the placement, tasks and projects are worked on and this involves agreeing a plan before starting each unit.
As part of the programme, the pupils will complete three tasks and one project which can take several weeks to fulfil.
Analysis of data and interaction with both internal and external personnel are key to the work completed.

“I am in my sixth and final year of
secondary school and have an interest
in business for my future career – so
this work experience is perfect for me
as I am keen to see how a business
like Leiths is run on a day-to-day basis
and I hope to gain key workplace
skills during my time here and
hopefully learn new things.
In my spare time I enjoy playing
football and golf and am a member
at the local Portlethen Golf Club.”
“I chose the Business Foundation
Apprenticeship as I feel like it would be
good for where I want to be in my future
– being involved in a big company with
key people, all with their individual jobs
working together to help Leiths reach its
potential.
In the short time I have been here I have
enjoyed meeting everyone. Everyone has
given me new ideas for my career path and
steered me in the right direction for what I
want to do.”
APPRENTICE UPDATE
Fleet Department
During the summer, the Fleet Department took on two school leavers, Harvey Walker and
Oskar Twardowski, who have both progressed to Apprenticeships. Harvey has just started an HGV
Mechanic SVQ at Edinburgh College, while Oskar is attending NESCol in Aberdeen on a Paintshop
& Bodywork SVQ. Both are employed here at Rigifa and attend college on a block release basis, with the
final year of the courses consisting of on-site practical assessments.
Harvey has had an interest in vehicle mechanics since school, while Oskar is following in his fathers’
footsteps as our vehicle/plant painter. We wish both all the best in their training and chosen careers.
Murdoch Shearer has also joined us from Portlethen Academy as a Placement Student.
He attends 3 days a week while he is in his last year of school, gaining valuable work- experience,
assisting with LGV repairs within our Fleet Workshop at Rigifa.
Apprentices, Oskar Twardowski and Harvey Walker
– and Murdoch Shearer, currently on Work Placement (L-R).
Fabrication Department
Civil Engineering and Surfacing Division
Sophie Moore, Curtis Milne and Kacper Boniowski have all started their Welding/
Fabrication Apprenticeships at Leiths – incorporating two years at Tullos Training
Centre where they will study fortnightly during the first year and once a month
during the second, with inhouse Workshop training supported by an Instructor
from the centre. Over four years, they will have built up a portfolio of work
providing them with an SVQ3 in Engineering.
The Division’s latest apprentices, Blair Thompson and Grant MacDonald,
can be seen in action here learning to operate our site dumpers. Blair is
at the Southbank CALA site and Grant is down at Aberdeenshire Council
carriageway works in Stonehaven.
