Nature Book Reader June 2020 - Flipbook - Page 73
Water were the two books
that I read avidly. Maxwell
had his otters Edal and Mij,
and Wyatt had the fawn.
Buck followed Wyatt to work,
or into his hut where it lay
on the hearth-rug in front
of the fire and then, when
maturing into a young adult
roe, began melting away into
the forest, surfacing again
uncannily between the trees
as Wyatt himself returned
from an increasing number of
trips away. Wyatt continued
his career in the outdoors,
becoming Chief Ranger of
The Lake District National
Park – Britain’s first.
Every few years I return
to this book. It grounds me,
reminds me who I am, and
why I still live close to the
forest.
