Nature Book Reader June 2020 - Flipbook - Page 117
This masterly researched
book – the one I would
cheerfully take to my desert
island – takes us back to a
bygone era where country
people’s relationship with
the land on which they lived
and toiled was intimately
steeped in magic, myths
and superstitions passed
down from one generation
to the next. A significant
number of native flora that
grew in their fields, woods
and hedgerows were also
essentially medicinal plants
and many of the local names
reflect this. In this sense my
favourite country book is a
true Language of Flowers.
