The Inner Critic - Flipbook - Page 32
Dr Paul Gilbert a clinical psychologist who focuses on compassionate based therapy suggests that
compassion is based on courage. We need courage to be willing to see into the causes of suering –
that of ourselves or others.
He suggests some essential practices for stepping in with courage:
•
Staying present to the moment, not avoiding, denying, being overwhelmed
•
Sensitivity to whatever feelings and suering arises
•
Being willing to be moved by the suering
•
Understanding the what and why, feeling the feelings with care and kindness
•
Allowing and accepting without condemnation
•
Caring with warmth, kindness, openness
How is it to do this for yourself? Can you? Dare you?
Can you bring this practice to something your Inner Critic says to you? Can you oer it compassion?
Can you open up, or soften your heart space for it.
The practice of self-compassion is for all of life – not only the Inner Critic.
