Welcome to Birmingham
Matt Hammond is PwC’s Head of International Markets for the U.K. and Senior Partner for the Midlands. Based
in Birmingham he has overseen the growth of PwC’s investment in the Midlands over the period 2015-2023 with
the creation of 1,000 new roles, leading a team of 3,000 across the Midlands. He is a Deals and Restructuring
Partner with over 30 years experience in professional services. He Chairs the West Midlands Growth Company
working closely with the region’s leading Universities, inward investors and local government.
With over 30 years experience in
professional services spanning 20 years
focussed on restructuring and a decade
of leadership roles, Matthew is one of
the most experienced regionally based
Partners at PwC.
Real Estate & Construction, Financial
& Business Services, Retail and
Consumer Goods. These clients range
from Global, UK Listed and Private
businesses to Local Government, from
fast growing to mature.
At the outset of his career Matthew
followed a path into Tax and then Deals
with a specialism in restructuring. He
is a member of both the Association of
Chartered Certified Accountants and
the Institute of Chartered Accountants
in England and Wales. He has also
been a qualified Insolvency Practitioner
since 1999 and has lead numerous
restructurings including the likes of
Carillion, Castlmore & The Cube in real
estate and construction, through to
AP Group, Caparo, MG Rover and BSM
across industrials and automotive, and
many others across energy, consumer
goods and financial services.
These have been complimented by
other Leadership roles Matthew has
including leading Strategic International
Markets for the U.K. firm of PwC and
Chairing the Financial Crime business
with its significant use of SMEs and
leveraging of technology assets and
global delivery centres. As U.K. Head of
Strategic International Markets Matthew
works with U.K. and overseas teams
in the U.S.A., Germany, Netherlands,
France, Singapore, India, South Korea
and China plus other cross-border
teams.
His client roles have since developed
to run a portfolio of significant clients
for PwC, across industries that are as
diverse as Automotive, Industrials &
Manufacturing, Energy and Chemicals,

Matthew oversaw PwC’s investment in
the Midlands, a multi-year programme
in which every area of PwC’s services
received investment and generated
collectively a record period of growth.
The centre-piece was the investment
in One Chamberlain Square, with PwC
becoming the anchor occupier for
the Paradise scheme which opened
in January 2020. Leading PwC in the
Midlands through the challenges of
the pandemic and Brexit, and the
subsequent highs of leading PwC’s
activation as a corporate partner of
the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth
Games, and a significant step-change
in the scale and diversity of our
recruitment in the Midlands.
Leading PwC’s overall activation of the
Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth
Games, Matthew worked with a
large team across the U.K. to ensure
the success with purpose of our
community, client and people based
activation. These programmes focussed
on social mobility, social enterprise, the
environment and PwC’s One Firm One
Day programmes. He has since led the
creation of Birmingham Digital Futures
with the University of Birmingham and
Tech She Can, delivering scaled skills
development from a large range of
employers into schools to close the
digital skills gap.
