Carbon Neutral Conference
We are proud to be working with Climate Impact Partners to make
this event CarbonNeutral®. This means that the emissions produced
from heating, lighting, waste, supplier and organiser travel, have been
balanced out by supporting carbon finance projects which reduce the
equivalent amount of CO2.
CarbonNeutral® certification was
created and is managed by Climate
Impact Partners. It was the first clear
set of guidelines for businesses to
achieve carbon neutrality back in 2002,
and every year since then Climate
Impact Partners has continued its
commitment to providing a robust
framework for clear, transparent and
high-quality carbon neutral action.
The CarbonNeutral Protocol is a
publicly available document that sets
out the requirements for companies to
achieve CarbonNeutral® certification.
It is updated annually with input from
an Advisory Council of external experts
to ensure it reflects the latest industry
and scientific best practice.
Sustainable Partners
Alongside our carbon offset scheme,
the Conference is made more
sustainable through our choice of
partners for the conference venue,
hotel accommodation, and event
management, along with sustainable
transport options for delegates to
consider.

Venue
Sustainability has never been a
box-ticking exercise for the ICC. It’s
something they believe passionately
in, both as a venue, but more
importantly as individuals. They also
believe it’s key to achieving long-term
growth for both customers and the
venue, which is why it’s embedded
into all their daily operations. They
are proud to hold the ISO 14001:2004
accreditation for environment
management systems, and have rolled
out several different initiatives across
the business to demonstrate our
commitment to sustainability.
The venue takes part in a district-based
scheme installed on site at the ICC to
provide electricity, chilled water for airconditioning and hot water for heating.
In addition to reducing their carbon
footprint, the scheme also enables
them to sell carbon credits – the
ultimate sustainability win-win.
Energy-saving sensors are fitted
throughout the venue and reduced
energy LED lighting is used wherever
possible. Their monitored switch-off
procedure also ensures that energy
use is kept to a minimum in event

spaces and offices, and that all
equipment and lights are switched off
when not in use.
Their motto is ‘reduce, reuse and
recycle’ when it comes to waste
management. They separate and
recycle glass, cardboard and paper
waste, and incinerate all other waste to
create electricity for local homes and
businesses through Birmingham City
Council’s Waste to Energy scheme.
The resulting ash from this process is
also stored and used as aggregate for
road building.
They ensure all their catering
suppliers operate to either BRC Grade
A or SALSA accreditation and are
continually audited by their Food
Safety Team. As their location is a
key part of who they are as a venue,
their chefs see it as their responsibility
to support local suppliers whenever
possible.
The ICC works closely with event
organisers to achieve ‘carbon neutral’
status for their events. This is achieved
by paying particular attention to the
‘reduce, reuse and recycle’ mantra
and helping organisers put this into
practice.
