Some employers appear to recognise
these challenges, with 29% believing their
current hybrid or remote working model
is causing recruitment and retention
problems. Overall, however, only 28% of the
organisations that we polled allowed staff
to work remotely five days a week.
Our consultants are also reporting that
flexible working issues are being raised
more frequently during the application
process.
For example, while candidates may be told
that they can work from home a certain
number of days a week, the employment
contract they receive may still specify
full-time office attendance. These informal
flexible working agreements require
applicants to place immense trust in
prospective employers to hold up their end
of the bargain once a job offer is accepted.
Since the pandemic, professionals are also
increasingly reluctant to attend in-person
interviews. This is having a knock-on effect
for the recruitment process, preventing
employers from attracting skilled
candidates.
"Some organisations still like to conduct
first-stage interviews face to face," says
James Lawrence, Principal Consultant at
Barclay Simpson.
"Unfortunately, this can extend the
recruitment process considerably because
candidates often cancel their interview or
delay it until a more convenient time. Speed
is of the essence when securing talent in
today's market."
