BOOTH TESTING STATIONS
Developed by students and professors at
University of Cape Town (UCT), the booths
are designed to ensure zero exposure
between the patient and the tester and can
be quickly disinfected in between patients.
They help reduce the requirement of full-on
PPE for the clinician doing the swabs, and
more than one person can be tested using
the unique multipurpose testing stations.
72 SHOWCASING AFRICAN INNOVATION
A contact-tracing app supported by the Kenyan
government. All Public Service Vehicles (PSV)
operators and their passengers are required to
register on the platform and this helps trace
back movements of people who test positive for
COVID-19. The app also records the number of
passengers that get on any public transport to
enforce social distancing rules by making sure
that only the permitted maximum numbers of
passengers are allowed on board.

AUTO HANDWASH
MACHINE TO HELP
PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES
An electronic sensor- operated, a user-friendly hand washing
machine that automatically dispenses soap, water, hand
dryer, and voice alert reminder. Developed by Franklyn Koroma, a young Civil Engineering graduate from Milton Margai
College of Education and Technology. “I observed that people living with disabilities were marginalized, because they
cannot use pedal-controlled handwashing machines that
have been launched in the country. This is why my team and
I, developed this device to help meet the needs of people
with disabilities.”
