relevant risk factors, and essential
risk management strategies.”
“A comprehensive understanding
of the company’s operations,
vulnerabilities, potential harms,
and how cyber threats can
exploit them is essential. With
this knowledge and built-up
trust, we can have much richer
conversations and stop narratives
from going sideways around the
business because that’s when
people get worried, and things
get stressful.”

Building and Empowering
Resilient Security Teams
While there is no secret sauce to
hiring a good team, Paul believes
giving people the space to perform
their best is vital.
“You can’t run a team in that
traditional hierarchical commandand-control way. You need to let
clever people have the space
to do clever things. It can’t be too
structured,” he explains.
Whilst Paul champions a fluid
environment that cultivates creativity
and independent thought, he
acknowledges the need for a more
controlled approach during incidents.
When it comes to hiring, nurturing,
and building a resilient team,
cultural alignment becomes pivotal.
Paul’s management philosophy
emphasises minimising
stressors and distractions in
high-pressure settings.
“I’m very clear with the team about
their role in security operations:
detecting and deterring attacks.
I want them focused on handling
attacks, but if an incident seems
to be escalating, they should
escalate it to me, and I’ll handle
communications with the business.
I try to create a virtual barrier around
them to let them concentrate on
their tasks. Clear delineation of
roles and priorities allows teams
to concentrate on their primary
mission, while established escalation
pathways ensure alignment with
overarching business objectives.”
