department over
the past few
years.
everal changes have taken place with parks & recreation
over recent months. One of the biggest changes involved the
re-creation of the position of Director of Parks, Recreation and
Forestry, reflecting that the department is now a stand-alone unit.
This was done to re-focus parks and recreation services to allow
for more concentrated efforts. The park maintenance, forestry and
golf divisions were previously housed under Public Works, and the
recreation division was housed under Community Development.
Another major change within the department was bringing aquatic
operations in-house. For several years, the City outsourced the
management and operations of the Heman Park Pool. These
functions have now been brought in-house so that the department
can provide a higher level of service and programs to our residents.
Park renovations and facility updates have also been a consistent
focus for the department over the past few years. The department
has worked on the renovations of three parks in Ward Three: Millar
Park, Fogerty Park, and Majerus Park. If you haven’t visited these
parks, I would encourage you to do so. In addition, the department
is currently working on the development of Fogerty Park Phase II;
is in the conceptual design phase of the renovation of Ackert Park;
is in the design phase of a splash spray ground at Heman Park Pool;
is working on Phase I of the short game practice area at Ruth Park;
is working on infrastructure improvements at Heman Pool; the
relocation of CubCare Child Care area and creation of an additional
class/programming space at Centennial Commons.
Finally, over the course of the next year, the department will
continue to work collaboratively with City departments, City
officials and other stakeholders to ensure that all public parks and
facilities continue to meet the standards of quality and customer
service that our residents and users have come to expect.
