OBSERVATION POINT
EXPLORATION POINT
Oak trees were well-known in biblical lands. The
mighty Tabor oak was located in the lower valleys
of Canaan. Oak forests once stood in the valleys but
were cleared in ancient times; however, stands of
trees or even individual oaks remain to this day. The
Canaanites regarded the oak tree as a sacred symbol
of strength and worshiped their pagan gods there.
Abram built an altar at the oak of Moreh, turning a
sacred place of the Canaanites into a place to worship
the one true God of all creation.
Throughout the Bible, God often chose unlikely
people to do his work. In this story God selected a
childless old man and his wife, promising to make
them the parents of a great nation. This sounded
crazy and impossible. For God, it was strategic. God
wanted to make it clear that his divine power was at
work in and through those he chose. Not one of us
is disqualified from—or really qualified for—God’s
call. It is God’s power that uses all kinds of people
to further his Kingdom.
