So all the people of Israel returned home.
Rehoboam continued to rule over the
Israelites who lived in the towns of Judah.
18 King Rehoboam sent Adoniram,* who
was in charge of forced labor, to restore order,
but the people of Israel stoned him to death.
When this news reached King Rehoboam, he
quickly jumped into his chariot and fled to Je
rusalem. 19 And to this day the northern tribes
of Israel have refused to be ruled by a descen
dant of David.

ROMANS 8:9‑25
But you are not controlled by your sinful na
ture. You are controlled by the Spirit if you
have the Spirit of God living in you. (And re
member that those who do not have the Spirit
of Christ living in them do not belong to him
at all.) 10 And Christ lives within you, so even
though your body will die because of sin, the
Spirit gives you life* because you have been
made right with God. 11 The Spirit of God, who
raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And
just as God raised Christ J esus from the dead,
he will give life to your mortal bodies by this
same Spirit living within you.
12 Therefore, dear brothers and sisters,*
you have no obligation to do what your sinful
nature urges you to do. 13 For if you live by its
dictates, you will die. But if through the power
of the Spirit you put to death the deeds of your
sinful nature,* you will live. 14 For all who are
led by the Spirit of God are children* of God.
15 So you have not received a spirit that
makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you re
ceived God’s Spirit when he adopted you as
his own children.* Now we call him, “Abba,
Father.”* 16 For his Spirit joins with our spirit
to affirm that we are God’s children. 17 And
since we are his children, we are his heirs. In
fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God’s
glory. But if we are to share his glory, we must
also share his suffering.

18 Yet what we suffer now is nothing com
pared to the glory he will reveal to us later.
19 For all creation is waiting eagerly for that
future day when God will reveal who his
children really are. 20 Against its will, all cre
ation was subjected to God’s curse. But with
eager hope, 21 the creation looks forward to
the day when it will join God’s children in
glorious freedom from death and decay. 22 For
we know that all creation has been groaning
as in the pains of childbirth right up to the
present time. 23 And we believers also groan,
even though we have the Holy Spirit within
us as a foretaste of future glory, for we long
for our bodies to be released from sin and suf
fering. We, too, wait with eager hope for the
day when God will give us our full rights as
his adopted children,* including the new bod
ies he has promised us. 24 We were given this
hope when we were saved. (If we already have
something, we d
on’t need to hope* for it. 25 But
if we look forward to something we don’t yet
have, we must wait patiently and confidently.)

PSALM 18:16‑36
16 He reached down from heaven and
rescued me;
he drew me out of deep waters.
17 He rescued me from my powerful enemies,
from those who hated me and were too
strong for me.
18 They attacked me at a moment when
I was in distress,
but the Lord supported me.
19 He led me to a place of safety;
he rescued me because he delights in me.
20 The Lord rewarded me for doing right;
he restored me because of my
innocence.
21 For I have kept the ways of the Lord;
I have not turned from my God
to follow evil.
22 I have followed all his regulations;
I have never abandoned his decrees.
23 I am blameless before God;
I have kept myself from sin.
24 The Lord rewarded me for doing right.
He has seen my innocence.

To the faithful you show yourself faithful;
to those with integrity you show
integrity.
To the pure you show yourself pure,
but to the crooked you show yourself
shrewd.
