sin, they suffered within themselves the pen
alty they deserved.
28 Since they thought it foolish to acknowl
edge God, he abandoned them to their foolish
thinking and let them do things that should
never be done. 29 Their lives became full of
every kind of wickedness, sin, greed, hate,
envy, murder, quarreling, deception, malicious
behavior, and gossip. 30 They are backstabbers,
haters of God, insolent, proud, and boastful.
They invent new ways of sinning, and they
disobey their parents. 31 They refuse to under
stand, break their promises, are heartless, and
have no mercy. 32 They know God’s justice re
quires that those who do these things deserve
to die, yet they do them anyway. Worse yet,
they encourage others to do them, too.

PSALM 10:1‑15
1 O Lord, why do you stand so far away?
Why do you hide when I am in trouble?
2 The wicked arrogantly hunt down the poor.
Let them be caught in the evil they plan
for others.
3 For they brag about their evil desires;
they praise the greedy and curse the
Lord.

The wicked are too proud to seek God.
They seem to think that God is dead.
Yet they succeed in everything they do.
They do not see your punishment
awaiting them.
They sneer at all their enemies.
They think, “Nothing bad will ever happen
to us!
We will be free of trouble forever!”
Their mouths are full of cursing, lies, and
threats.*
Trouble and evil are on the tips of their
tongues.

They lurk in ambush in the villages,
waiting to murder innocent people.
They are always searching for helpless
victims.
Like lions crouched in hiding,
they wait to pounce on the helpless.
Like hunters they capture the helpless
and drag them away in nets.
Their helpless victims are crushed;
they fall beneath the strength of the
wicked.
The wicked think, “God isn’t watching us!
He has closed his eyes and won’t even
see what we do!”
Arise, O Lord!
Punish the wicked, O God!
Do not ignore the helpless!
Why do the wicked get away with
despising God?
They think, “God will never call us to
account.”
But you see the trouble and grief they
cause.
You take note of it and punish them.
The helpless put their trust in you.
You defend the orphans.
Break the arms of these wicked, evil
people!
Go after them until the last one is
destroyed.
10:7 Greek version reads cursing and bitterness. Compare
Rom 3:14.
PROVERBS 19:6‑7
6 Many seek favors from a ruler;
everyone is the friend of a person who
gives gifts!
7 The relatives of the poor despise them;
how much more will their friends avoid
them!
Though the poor plead with them,
their friends are gone.
NO EXCUSES || G
od is evident to all people. The evidence is earth and sky and his
invisible qualities of eternal power and divine nature, all plainly displayed. Only when
we acknowledge God can we begin the journey to fully know him and his Son. We can
think ourselves wise but in reality be utter fools. In Bible times people worshiped idols
in the shapes of birds, animals, and reptiles. Today we worship our social media image,
our possessions, even our own destructive addictions. There are no excuses. Let’s get
our focus back on God.
