Paul, they listened as he told them about faith
in Christ J esus. 25 As he reasoned with them
about righteousness and s elf-control and the
coming day of judgment, Felix became fright
ened. “Go away for now,” he replied. “When it
is more convenient, I’ll call for you again.” 26 He
also hoped that Paul would bribe him, so he
sent for him quite often and talked with him.
27 After two years went by in this way, Felix
was succeeded by Porcius Festus. And because
Felix wanted to gain favor with the Jewish
people, he left Paul in prison.

THE FEAR FACTOR || G
overnor Felix listened to the Good News of Jesus Christ.
But when Paul spoke about the coming judgment, Felix’s fear caused him to send Paul
away. Whatever it is that causes us to fear, we have a choice. We can run from it, deny it,
push it out of our way . . . or respond to it and surrender our lives to Christ. We face these
same choices today and every day. Will we let fear cause us to ignore the truth we know,
or will we courageously follow the truth we need?

Ashhur (the father of Tekoa) had two wives,
named Helah and Naarah. 6 Naarah gave
birth to Ahuzzam, Hepher, Temeni, and
Haahashtari. 7 Helah gave birth to Zereth,
Izhar,* Ethnan, 8 and Koz, who became the
ancestor of Anub, Zobebah, and all the
families of Aharhel son of Harum.
9 There was a man named Jabez who was
more honorable than any of his brothers.
His mother named him Jabez* because his
birth had been so painful. 10 He was the
one who prayed to the God of Israel, “Oh,

that you would bless me and expand my
territory! Please be with me in all that I do,
and keep me from all trouble and pain!”
And God granted him his request.
11 Kelub (the brother of Shuhah) was the
father of Mehir. Mehir was the father of

rapha, Paseah, and Tehinnah. Tehinnah
was the father of I r-nahash. These were
the descendants of Recah.
13 The sons of Kenaz were Othniel and
Seraiah. Othniel’s sons were Hathath and
