Then the earth quaked and
trembled.
The foundations of the
mountains shook;
they quaked because of his
anger.
Smoke poured from his nostrils;
fierce flames leaped from his
mouth.
Glowing coals blazed forth
from him.
He opened the heavens and came
down;
dark storm clouds were beneath
his feet.
Mounted on a mighty angelic
being,* he flew,
soaring on the wings of the
wind.
He shrouded himself in darkness,
veiling his approach with dark
rain clouds.
Thick clouds shielded the
brightness around him
and rained down hail and
burning coals.*
The Lord thundered from heaven;
the voice of the Most High
resounded
amid the hail and burning coals.
He shot his arrows and scattered
his enemies;
great bolts of lightning flashed,
and they were confused.

Then at your command, O Lord,
at the blast of your breath,
the bottom of the sea could be
seen,
and the foundations of the earth
were laid bare.

My children,* listen when your
father corrects you.
Pay attention and learn good
judgment,
for I am giving you good guidance.
Don’t turn away from my
instructions.
For I, too, was once my father’s
son,
tenderly loved as my mother’s
only child.
My father taught me,
“Take my words to heart.
Follow my commands, and you
will live.
Get wisdom; develop good
judgment.
Don’t forget my words or turn
away from them.
Don’t turn your back on wisdom,
for she will protect you.
Love her, and she will
guard you.”
4:1 Hebrew My sons.
Lord, those who thought they knew Jesus let that
familiarity blind them to his message. Protect all who lead
from this mistake, Lord. Don’t let prejudice or bias get
in the way of hearing from you and those who serve you.
Amen.
GENESIS 42:18–43:34
On the third day Joseph said to them
[his brothers], “I am a God-fearing
man. If you do as I say, you will live.
19 If you really are honest men, choose
one of your brothers to remain in
prison. The rest of you may go home
with grain for your starving families.
20 But you must bring your youngest
brother back to me. This will prove

that you are telling the truth, and you
will not die.” To this they agreed.
21 Speaking among themselves,
they said, “Clearly we are being punished because of what we did to Jo
seph long ago. We saw his anguish
when he pleaded for his life, but we
wouldn’t listen. That’s why we’re in
this trouble.”
22 “Didn’t I tell you not to sin against
