7 And
the man jumped up and went
home! 8 Fear swept through the crowd
as they saw this happen. And they
praised God for sending a man with
such great authority.*
9 As J
esus was walking along, he
saw a man named Matthew sitting at
his tax collector’s booth. “Follow me
and be my disciple,” J esus said to him.
So Matthew got up and followed him.
10 Later, Matthew invited Jesus and
his disciples to his home as dinner
guests, along with many tax collectors
and other disreputable sinners. 11 But
when the Pharisees saw this, they
asked his disciples, “Why does your
teacher eat with such scum?*”
12 When
Jesus heard this, he said,
“Healthy people don’t need a doctor—
sick people do.” 13 Then he added,
“Now go and learn the meaning of this
Scripture: ‘I want you to show mercy,
not offer sacrifices.’* For I have come
to call not those who think they are
righteous, but those who know they
are sinners.”
14 One day the disciples of John the
Baptist came to Jesus and asked him,
“Why d
on’t your disciples fast* like we
do and the Pharisees do?”
15 Jesus replied, “Do wedding guests
mourn while celebrating with the
groom? Of course not. But someday
the groom will be taken away from
them, and then they will fast.
16 “Besides, who would patch old
clothing with new cloth? For the new
patch would shrink and rip away from
the old cloth, leaving an even bigger
tear than before.
17 “And no one puts new wine into
old wineskins. For the old skins would
burst from the pressure, spilling the
wine and ruining the skins. New wine
is stored in new wineskins so that
both are preserved.”

The Lord is king forever and ever!
The godless nations will vanish
from the land.
Lord, you know the hopes of the
helpless.
Surely you will hear their cries
and comfort them.
You will bring justice to the
orphans and the oppressed,
so mere people can no longer
terrify them.

Honor the Lord with your wealth
and with the best part of
everything you produce.
Then he will fill your barns with
grain,
and your vats will overflow with
good wine.
Lord, when blind men begged for mercy, you gave it.
I’m asking that you have mercy on this nation. Help
us trust you more deeply and embrace your discipline.
Give us leaders who’ll call us not just to a party
or platform but to you. Amen.
GENESIS 28:1–29:35
So Isaac called for Jacob, blessed him,
and said, “You must not marry any of
these Canaanite women. 2 Instead,
go at once to Paddan-aram, to the
house of your grandfather Bethuel,
and marry one of your uncle Laban’s
daughters. 3 May God Almighty* bless
you and give you many children. And

may your descendants multiply and
become many nations! 4 May God pass
on to you and your descendants* the
blessings he promised to Abraham.
May you own this land where you are
now living as a foreigner, for God gave
this land to Abraham.”
5 So Isaac sent Jacob away, and he
went to Paddan-aram to stay with his
