that much. 47 If you are kind only to

from anyone else? Even pagans do
that. 48 But you are to be perfect, even
as your Father in heaven is perfect.”

O Lord, don’t rebuke me in your
anger
or discipline me in your rage.
Have compassion on me, Lord,
for I am weak.
Heal me, Lord, for my bones are
in agony.
I am sick at heart.
How long, O Lord, until you
restore me?
Return, O Lord, and rescue me.
Save me because of your
unfailing love.
For the dead do not remember you.
Who can praise you from the
grave?*
I am worn out from sobbing.
All night I flood my bed with
weeping,
drenching it with my tears.
My vision is blurred by grief;
my eyes are worn out because
of all my enemies.
Go away, all you who do evil,
for the Lord has heard my
weeping.
The Lord has heard my plea;
the Lord will answer my prayer.
May all my enemies be disgraced
and terrified.
May they suddenly turn back in
shame.

“For they hated knowledge
and chose not to fear the Lord.
They rejected my [Wisdom’s]
advice
and paid no attention when I
corrected them.
Therefore, they must eat the bitter
fruit of living their own way,
choking on their own schemes.
For simpletons turn away from
me—to death.
Fools are destroyed by their own
complacency.
But all who listen to me will live in
peace,
untroubled by fear of harm.”
Lord, what great counsel you offer! Help every elected
official cry out to you for insight, value your wisdom
beyond all measure, and courageously act on what you
call them to do. And grant me that same courage, Lord.
Amen.
GENESIS 16:1–18:15
Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had not
been able to bear children for him. But
she had an Egyptian servant named
Hagar. 2 So Sarai said to Abram, “The
Lord has prevented me from having children. Go and sleep with my
servant. Perhaps I can have children
through her.” And Abram agreed with

Sarai’s proposal. 3 So Sarai, Abram’s
wife, took Hagar the Egyptian servant
and gave her to Abram as a wife. (This
happened ten years after Abram had
settled in the land of Canaan.)
4 So Abram had sexual relations
with Hagar, and she became pregnant.
But when Hagar knew she was pregnant, she began to treat her mistress,
