ples. 24Suddenly, a fierce storm struck
the lake, with waves breaking into the
boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25 The disciples went and woke him up, shouting,
“Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”
26 Jesus responded, “Why are you
afraid? You have so little faith!” Then he
got up and rebuked the wind and waves,
and suddenly there was a great calm.
27 The disciples were amazed. “Who is
this man?” they asked. “Even the winds
and waves obey him!”
28When Jesus arrived on the other
side of the lake, in the region of the Gadarenes,* two men who were possessed by
demons met him. They came out of the
tombs and were so violent that no one
could go through that area.
29 They began screaming at him, “Why
are you interfering with us, Son of God?
Have you come here to torture us before
God’s appointed time?”
30There happened to be a large herd
of pigs feeding in the distance. 31So the
demons begged, “If you cast us out, send
us into that herd of pigs.”
32“All right, go!” Jesus commanded
them. So the demons came out of the
men and entered the pigs, and the whole
herd plunged down the steep hillside
into the lake and drowned in the water.
33 The herdsmen fled to the nearby
town, telling everyone what happened
to the demon-possessed men. 34Then
the entire town came out to meet Jesus,
but they begged him to go away and
leave them alone.

PSALM 10:1-15
O Lord, why do you stand so far
away?
Why do you hide when I am
in trouble?
2 The wicked arrogantly hunt down
the poor.
Let them be caught in the evil they
plan for others.
3 For they brag about their evil
desires;

they praise the greedy and curse
the Lord.
The wicked are too proud to
seek God.
They seem to think that God
is dead.
5 Yet they succeed in everything
they do.
They do not see your punishment
awaiting them.
They sneer at all their enemies.
6 They think, “Nothing bad will ever
happen to us!
We will be free of trouble
forever!”

Their mouths are full of cursing,
lies, and threats.*
Trouble and evil are on the tips
of their tongues.
8 They lurk in ambush in the villages,
waiting to murder innocent
people.
They are always searching for
helpless victims.
9 Like lions crouched in hiding,
they wait to pounce on the
helpless.
Like hunters they capture the
helpless
and drag them away in nets.
10 Their helpless victims are crushed;
they fall beneath the strength of
the wicked.
11 The wicked think, “God isn’t
watching us!
He has closed his eyes and won’t
even see what we do!”

Arise, O Lord!
Punish the wicked, O God!
Do not ignore the helpless!
13 Why do the wicked get away with
despising God?
They think, “God will never call
us to account.”
14 But you see the trouble and grief
they cause.
You take note of it and punish
them.
The helpless put their trust in you.
You defend the orphans.
