even a cup of cold water to one of the
least of my followers, you will surely be
rewarded.”
11:1 When
Jesus had finished giving
these instructions to his twelve disciples, he went out to teach and preach in
towns throughout the region.
2 John the Baptist, who was in prison,
heard about all the things the Messiah
was doing. So he sent his disciples to ask
Jesus, 3“Are you the Messiah we’ve been
expecting,* or should we keep looking
for someone else?”
4 Jesus told them, “Go back to John
and tell him what you have heard and
seen—5 the blind see, the lame walk, the
lepers are cured, the deaf hear, the dead
are raised to life, and the Good News is
being preached to the poor. 6And tell
him, ‘God blesses those who do not turn
away because of me.*’”

PSALM 13:1-6
For the choir director: A psalm of David.
O Lord, how long will you forget
me? Forever?
How long will you look the
other way?
2 How long must I struggle with
anguish in my soul,
with sorrow in my heart every
day?
How long will my enemy have
the upper hand?
1
Turn and answer me, O Lord
my God!
Restore the sparkle to my eyes,
or I will die.
4 Don’t let my enemies gloat, saying,
“We have defeated him!”
Don’t let them rejoice at my
downfall.
3
5
But I trust in your unfailing love.
I will rejoice because you have
rescued me.
6
1 6
I will sing to the Lord
because he is good to me.
PROVERBS 3:16-18
She [Wisdom] offers you long life in her
right hand, and riches and honor in her
left. She will guide you down delightful
paths; all her ways are satisfying. Wisdom is a tree of life to those who embrace her; happy are those who hold her
tightly.

GENESIS 32:13–34:31
Jacob stayed where he was for the night.
Then he selected these gifts from his
possessions to present to his brother,
Esau: 14 200 female goats, 20 male
goats, 200 ewes, 20 rams, 1530 female
camels with their young, 40 cows,
10 bulls, 20 female donkeys, and
10 male donkeys. 16He divided these
animals into herds and assigned each to
different servants. Then he told his servants, “Go ahead of me with the animals,
but keep some distance between the
herds.”
17He gave these instructions to the
men leading the first group: “When my
brother, Esau, meets you, he will ask,
‘Whose servants are you? Where are
you going? Who owns these animals?’
18You must reply, ‘They belong to your
servant Jacob, but they are a gift for his
master Esau. Look, he is coming right
behind us.’”
19 Jacob gave the same instructions to
the second and third herdsmen and to
all who followed behind the herds:
“You must say the same thing to Esau
when you meet him. 20And be sure to
say, ‘Look, your servant Jacob is right
behind us.’”
Jacob thought, “I will try to appease
him by sending gifts ahead of me.
