Practice Spiritual Disciplines
Discipline is not a word many of us like to hear or attempt to practice. But
the word disciple, something we are all called to be, comes from the root
word d
iscipline. Most of us—whether we do it regularly or not—are familiar
with the idea of disciplining ourselves in terms of watching what we eat and
being sure to get enough exercise. But you may not realize that spiritual discipline is just as important, if not more important, than physical discipline
(1 Timothy 4:8).
We need to engage in certain spiritual disciplines like regular Bible study
(see 2 Timothy 2:15), prayer (see 1 Thessalonians 5:17), and involvement in our
church (see Hebrews 10:25), whether we feel like it or not. Here are a few more
spiritual disciplines the growing believer needs to practice.
• Let God bless you see Numbers 6:24-27, page 135
• Stop making excuses see Luke 9:59-62, page 972
• Fasting see Acts 13:2, page 1046
• Participating in Communion see 1 Corinthians 11:23-30, page 1102
