Understanding the Beatitudes
In Matthew 5:3-12, Jesus shared a list of eight blessings or promises—commonly known
as “beatitudes”—for his followers. The Beatitudes still have a lot to teach us about the
many ways God cares for his followers, as well as how he expects us to live. Some of
these blessings apply to our lives here on earth, and others give us hope for eternal life
with Jesus.
Blessings and Promises for the Present
• God will comfort those who are sad (verse 4).
• God will reward those who really want fairness and justice (verse 6).
• God will be merciful to those who show mercy to other people (verse 7).
