The Lord God had not yet sent rain to water the earth.
G E N E S I S 2:5
Can you imagine living in a world without rain? Yet there were no weather
forecasters or rained-out picnics in Noah’s day. The Bible says that Noah
had never seen rain, much less torrential rain or destructive floods of water.
Before the Great Flood, streams and rivers watered the plants, and springs
of water that flowed upward from under the earth misted and hydrated the
plants. So Noah had to take God’s word in faith for this thing called “rain”
and follow God’s instructions to prepare for a dystopian event he could never
even imagine (Genesis 6:14-17). “It was by faith that Noah built a large boat
to save his family from the flood. He obeyed God, who warned him about
things that had never happened before. By his faith Noah condemned the
rest of the world, and he received the righteousness that comes by faith”
(Hebrews 11:7). And God saved Noah and his family along with a menagerie
of animals inside that huge ark constructed of wood.
Then God made a covenant promise to us that he would never again
destroy the earth with a flood. He sealed this promise with a bow of colors
in the sky that could only appear with the presence of instability in the
atmosphere known as rain—a rainbow. “I have placed my rainbow in the
clouds. It is the sign of my covenant with you and with all the earth” (Genesis
9:13). When there is instability in the atmosphere of your life, remember that
we are living arks for God to dwell in, holding the promise of eternal life with
him that those who believe will not perish.
