A LETTER FROM
Roy Lessin
Dear Reader,
In the spring of 1971, DaySpring was birthed with a vision to make Christ known
through the printed page. It was a time in Southern California when God’s love
flowed through the hearts of thousands of young people—a new generation of
believers known as the Jesus People.
The four founders of DaySpring—Don Leetch, Dean Kerns, Russ Flint, and
I—sought new, fresh ways to share the love of Jesus and to help the young,
enthusiastic Jesus People share their newfound faith with others. We began
with a few pamphlets, some stickers, a poster, and a button or two. Nothing we
did was traditional. And none of us had any idea that within a year we would be
sharing God’s heart through the publication of greeting cards. God took us all by
surprise.
When I first began writing cards, I quickly ran out of things to say. As I prayed
about it, God impressed these words upon my heart: “Listen to Me. Hear what I
am saying through My Word. Write down what you hear, and put it on your cards.
What I am saying to you I am saying to all My children, and they will respond.” I
knew that without the Scriptures I had nothing to say, yet because of them, I could
dip my pen into an endless river of comfort.
As DaySpring grew, we discovered that greeting cards were welcomed carriers
for messages of hope and encouragement. A simple thought spoken one day by
my older brother, Don Lessin, helped define our work and ministry: “From God’s
heart, to our hearts, to the hearts of others.”
You were made to know the love that is in God’s heart for you. Jesus has
manifested it to you. The Holy Spirit whispers it to you. The book you hold in your
hands reveals it to you. What an awesome privilege you have been given to know
His love and make it known to others in your generation.
