The impactSpotlight: Our Lady’s RC High School, ManchesterOur Lady’s RC High School in Blackley,North Manchester, has been a partner ofTutor Trust since 2021. A Catholic school,and part of the Diocese of Salford, theschool believes that “each student has theirown individual strengths, gifts and talents:our aim is to ensure that these are alldeveloped to their full potential.”Tutoring is part of the school’s o昀昀er inpursuit of this, and OLHS uses Tutor Trustto support Year 11 tutees as they preparefor GCSE exams. This year, 82 Year 11 pupilsparticipated in the mainstream tutoringprogramme, with the school also runningTutoring Plus and MESME programmes.Mainstream sessions ran on a Saturdaymorning, with pupils choosing to comeinto school to bene昀椀t from the tutoringprovision. This was enabled by theexceptional commitment of OLHS sta昀昀,with a senior member of the team alwayspresent on site to oversee sessions. Sucha model wouldn’t work everywhere, butthe strong culture and relationships atOLHS meant there was always a goodturnout, with Year 11 pupils averaging10.6 hours of support per programme.Tutors spoke incredibly highly aboutOLHS pupils and it’s clear that a realrapport developed between the tutorsand their tutees:One of the best moments I had“in delivering tutoring this yearwas when I completed a Saturdayassignment at Our Lady’s RC HighSchool. During that time, I had theopportunity to work with a groupof students who had a passion forEnglish Literature. We would engagein thought-provoking discussionsabout poems from the Power andCon昀氀ict poetry cluster. Seeing theirenthusiasm and interest in the subjectexpand throughout our sessions wastruly inspiring. It was a pleasure to bea part of their journey and contributeto their love for English Literature.Emmelie Dryburgh, Graduate in Dramafrom the University of Manchester61% of the tutoring cohort achieved a Grade4 or higher in Maths, 65% did so in English,and 92% did so in Science.The pupils themselves lovedthe tutoring:I enjoy tutoring sessions:8.6 / 10My tutor encourages me in my sessions:9.4 / 10”I really enjoyed myself and if I“had the opportunity to do it again,I de昀椀nitely would.
