There are many great resources available and highly trained
professionals to consult with. Family Planning NSW has a
comprehensive library and bookshop of resources dealing with the
wide array of issues around relationships and sexuality for people
with disability. Many of these resources are written in plain English
and include illustrations to support the learning needs of children
with intellectual disability. There is a resource list on Family Planning
NSW’s website.
And in answer to that tricky question many parents ask: Is there a right
or wrong time or age to start talking? It’s always good to look at the
bigger picture.
‘If we define sexuality education as instilling self-worth, self-value and
self-esteem, then sexuality education should begin as soon as a child
can comprehend what you are telling them.’
Family Planning NSW provides a regular program of education
sessions for parents and carers of people with intellectual disability.
These sessions cover a range of topics including preparing for puberty,
decision making and safety, relationships and dating, sexual health,
contraception, parenting and tips for talking about sexuality. For more
information go to www.fpnsw.org.au/parentforums
Parents can also receive other information through Family Planning
NSW, including Talkline confidential telephone service, the library,
bookshop and website.
See page 62 for information on how to contact Family Planning NSW.
