Helping disadvantaged students
and the Barr Smith Library
The Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarships Fund was introduced in 2002 to help outstanding
but disadvantaged students gain a start at the University of Adelaide each year. The
fund was made possible through generous donations from University alumni and other
members of the public. A total of 32 scholarships have been awarded, with each
student supported for up to four years of their undergraduate program. In celebration
of the University’s 140th anniversary and reflecting Augustus Short’s founding vision, in
2014 the scholarships were renamed the Augustus Short Scholarships.
The Barr Smith Library Appeal was also launched in 2002 and has raised over
$1 million with 14,500 titles added to the collections. The generous response from
our donors is growing each year, making a real difference to learning and research.
