Welcome
WAITE 100
2024
I started at the University of Adelaide in
January 1995, as Professor of Viticulture,
at what was then the Faculty of Agriculture
and Natural Resource Sciences, based at the
Waite campus. For those of us with the privilege of studying or working here, Waite holds
a special place in our memories. Its history
is evident wherever you look. Its uniqueness
is unmistakeable. Its tranquillity has inspired
much contemplative thought.
It is not only the University’s presence here
that makes Waite extraordinary. We are also
co-located with some of Australia’s leading
agriculture, food, wine and environmental
research organisations. This brings Waite’s
researchers into close proximity with a range
of complementary disciplines, propelling
research excellence that meets the evolving
needs and challenges of the global community. For our students, learning experiences
offered at the Waite help prepare them for
careers that will continue to shape the future.

What happens on this campus influences the
world around us, and deepens our knowledge
of what we eat and drink, and how we interact with, appreciate and respect our natural
environment. The Waite is not just a magnet
for the very best minds, though. It plays an
equally important role for the community
who access the grounds for sport, recreation,
relaxation and immersion, and provides joy
for a diverse and incredibly talented swathe
of volunteers, ranging in age from eight to
beyond 90.
It is thanks to Peter and Matilda Waite’s
foresight and exceptional generosity that the
University will continue to benefit scholars,
society and the community for generations
to come.
Professor Peter Høj AC
Vice-Chancellor and President,
University of Adelaide
The Waite bequest to the University of
Adelaide remains one of the single largest individual bequests in South Australia’s history.
The effects of this gift of Urrbrae House and
300 acres of land are enduring. Thanks to
Peter and his wife Matilda’s generosity, 100
years of scholars, researchers, scientists and
innovators have conducted and enabled research and education that genuinely benefits
our society.
The objective of the bequest was “to advance
the cause of education and more especially to
promote the teaching and study of Agriculture and Forestry and allied subjects”. It led
to the establishment of the Waite Agricultural
Research Institute in 1924, and now includes
complementary organisations and centres
engaged in world-class research and development in plant biotechnology, cereal breeding,
sustainable food and agriculture, wine, horticulture and natural resource sciences.
