£10,000 to create first
purpose-built laboratories
for the new Institute.
CSIR soils’ research

contents of pastures
begins. Discovery
of copper, boron,

deficiencies instrumental
in developing land
for agricultural use in

1933 Constance
Eardley becomes
first woman scientist
appointed to permanent
academic staff at Waite.
1941 Warigo, first of a
series of rust-resistant
wheat varieties, released
by Waite Institute.
1951 Karim Abdul,
a UNESCO scholar,
awarded first PhD
at Waite.
1924 Urrbrae House used as
Director’s residence and first
offices of Waite Agricultural
Research Institute.
100 years of Waite
It is a storied history that has occurred on campus since Peter and
Matilda Waite made their generous bequest. It’s impossible to capture
the hundreds of plant varieties we’ve bred, the endless and ongoing discoveries made in one magazine, but we’ve pulled out a few highlights
and moments of note that occurred at our humble home.
