Making strides
in bushfire recovery
The University of Adelaide’s state-of-the-art Equine Health and Performance
Centre at Roseworthy campus faced the ultimate test after the devastating
Pinery Þres ripped through South Australia’s mid-north in November last year.
A
mong the victims were badly injured
pets and livestock, including eight
horses admitted to the Equine
Health Performance Centre, as the ûres
burnt more than 82,000 hectares of land.
On the critical list was Cheyanne, an
18-year-old mare, that arrived at the centre
suffering from severe burns to her face,
legs and tail. She also had signs of smoke
inhalation and a wound to her front leg.
Robin van den Boom, Associate
Professor in Equine Health at Roseworthy
campus' School of Animal and Veterinary
Sciences, was one of the vets treating
horses as they arrived at the clinic.
