MUSICHallof fameThree distinguished ElderCon alumni share theirinspiring career journeysSTORY BY BIANCA CHAPTINIThe iconic place where the wonder ofmusic has been celebrated for more than100 years and where world-classmusicians have delighted audiences withtheir outstanding talent is being refurbished.Elder Hall, part of Australia’s oldest tertiary musicschool, The Elder Conservatorium of Music (orthe Con as it is affectionately known), is one of thecountry’s finest concert halls.Designed in a Florentine gothic style by architectFrank John Niash, and built by Walter CharlesTorode, the Hall was officially opened on26 September 1900. A bequest from Sir ThomasElder in 1897 made the erection of the imposingAdelaide icon possible.To celebrate our Elder ‘Take a Seat’ campaign,where the community can help preserve andenhance the Hall for future generations, we askedthree of our internationally renowned Eldergraduates where their musical journeys havetaken them.38THE UNIVERSITY OF ADELAIDE
