Fanny and
the firemen
Another extraordinary “prosh” revelation
from our past.
It’s been a mystery for more than 70 years –
now solved.
How did students hang a life-sized
mannequin named “Fanny” from the spire
of Elder Hall in 1952 – and who were they?
Our distinguished 90-year-old contributor,
a noted physicist, reveals the truth.
time
/tʌim/
a: the measured or measurable
period during which an action,
process, or condition exists or
continues
b: a nonspatial continuum that is
measured in terms of events which
succeed one another from past
through present to future
About our covers
This issue has bold cover images on white
and black backgrounds front and rear.
The front cover image is of a beautiful
three-minute egg timer sourced from the
Museum of Contemporary Art Australia.
It is intended as a perhaps slightly literal,
but striking and beautiful, representation
of the inexorable movement of time – our
theme this issue.
The rear cover features an image created
to show a sunrise over Earth, seen from
space – promising hope. It is a pointer to
our next issue this year when we will peer
into ‘the future’.
LUMEN
Our inside covers feature a mosaic of
dozens of stories and people from the
pages of Lumen over its 50+ year lifespan.
There have been many changes over
that time.
Our covers are printed on slightly heavier
paper stock this issue, necessary because
of the nature of the cover images.
All images turned into reality by
photographic editor Isaac Freeman
from concepts by Lumen Editor
Mark Douglas.
