Remembrance Day
The Headmaster introduced an important event to
the School calendar three years ago, which was to
assemble the whole School in the Concert Hall on
11th November for a simple act of remembrance for
the fallen in war. The service comprises some
thoughts on war from a member of sta昀昀, a prayer,
the sounding of the Last Post, the two minutes
silence and Reveille. A small party, led by members
of the CCF, the Headmaster, the Head Boy and the
Head Girl and invited Alumni proceed to the War
Memorial for the laying of the wreaths.
We war }me babies were bravely protected by our
parents from the full realisa}on of what was
happening and this protec}on may have con}nued
for most of their lives, as recollec}on of those
events remained too painful.
My children were born over 20 years aver the end of
the war and their children some 60 years aver it. I
think we owe it to them to share our understanding
of our parents9 experiences and, for those of us who
lived through the war, our own recollec}ons of the
Blitz, sleeping in the air raid shelter, the strains of
evacua}on and the impact on our wider family
circle. We count our blessings.
I oven wonder at this and other Remembrance
ceremonies, what is going through the minds of
young people and not so young people, as we
observe the two minutes silence. My genera}on,
born during the Second World War or shortly before Chris Great (1960)
are the last to experience a con昀氀ict on our shores.
