STUDENT PROGRAMMING
All Stephenson Institute programs take heavy inspiration and guidance from the conceptual argument embodied in
Pierre F. Goodrich’s architectural design for the Goodrich Seminar Room within the Lilly library. Goodrich believed
that the long arc of civilization is in essence a process wherein the human race is continually attempting to
understand and secure human freedom and individual rights. From the ancient Sumerian Ama-gi, to the classical
economists of the Scottish Enlightenment era, key names of major contributors to the theoretical foundations of a
free society adorn the walls. Past the Enlightenment, the room conveys a profound message to its occupants. First,
the subject matter of liberty has been of interest to the brightest and most creative minds since the dawn of
humanity. Second, the study of freedom is an inspiring and epic journey. Thus, the room invites any and all motivated
students to read and engage the literature and ideas stored within, and furthermore to use the space with a great
sense of responsibility. Within our own researched investigations and conversations are found the present and future
hopes of a free society.
The Stephenson Institute aims to fuel that inspirational fire further. With substantial resources, dedicated staff, and
an active schedule of programming opportunities; the hope is that students enrolled at Wabash and beyond will
take advantage to invest in their own knowledge and productive capacities as individuals, lifetime learners, and
potential defenders of a free society.
Institute speakers and programs represent key opportunities for students to not only hear and digest
substantive ideas, but also to meet and engage with internationally renowned scholars and authors. Students
are afforded the opportunity to not only attend the formal presentations and ask direct questions, but they
also get to converse and interact with visiting scholars across a variety of informal discussion opportunities
and meal events during the campus visits.
In addition to the lists below, please consider visiting the events page of our website to find accessible links
