SUPPORTING WOMEN-LED CONSERVATION IN THE
PACIFIC AND BEYOND
Across every country in the world, women are the
primary resource managers—whether that means
meal planning and grocery shopping, planting and
harvesting crops, or gathering water and firewood.
Women also utilize, understand, and interact with
nature and natural resources differently than men. In
coastal and marine areas, for example, women typically
harvest crabs, shellfish, and other marine life near
the shoreline. Meanwhile, men—who often control
household finances—load boats, gather nets and head
further out to sea.
This means that if we only talk to men about
environmental challenges, we’ll develop solutions
that work mostly for men—and miss out on key
insights women could offer. As TNC’s Director of
Gender and Equity in Asia Pacific Robyn James puts
it, “Addressing gender inequity requires us to be
intentional. It won’t happen by itself or on the sidelines.
We have the evidence, from carbon to conservation,
wnsif and
cities benefitting
f
that results will be better
we consider
gender.”
TNC Maine commits funds annually to support conservation projects around the world. Part of our goal is learning
from our colleagues. In 2023, our colleagues in the Asia Pacific region used Maine funding to advance womenled environmental initiatives—including protecting mangroves in Papua New Guinea and launching an ecotourism
venture in Melanesia.
