ABOUT THE PHOTOS
The white pine—Maine’s official state tree—absorbs carbon from the
atmosphere and helps to slow climate change. The rocky Maine coast
offers a natural defense against sea-level rise. Headwater streams serve
as cold water refuges in our warming summers. Black-throated green
warblers raise their young in Maine’s forests but are likely to become a
rarer sight this century as their habitat and range shift northward.
