NEW WORKS REFLECTING THE MOMENT
The SFJAZZ Collective is the All-Star Jazz Supergroup featuring Gretchen Parlato on
vocals, Chris Potter on saxophones, David Sánchez on saxophones, Etienne Charles
on trumpet, Warren Wolf on vibraphone, Martin Luther McCoy on guitar, Edward
Simon on keyboards, Matt Brewer on bass, and Kendrick A.D. Scott on drums.
For this performance, the SFJAZZ Collective will present a vital program of new
compositions by the band inspired by and in response to the extraordinary social and
global issues we have faced over the last year.
Since its founding, the Collective has devoted each new season to exploring the
oeuvre of a single composer – Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk,
Stevie Wonder, and Antonio Carlos Jobim are a few of those who’ve received the
Collective treatment. Each member of the band arranges one or two classic numbers,
and also composes an original piece or two, letting the repertory toggle between past
and present. This year’s project continues that strategy, though the balance has
tipped toward brand new material.
“The octet boasts as much or more collective talent, firepower and
critical acclaim than any other jazz ensemble going” — DownBeat
