A couple of times a week, Food BankingKenya sends a vehicle up to thismountainous region to collect all the foodthat Chege has gathered and bring it backto Nairobi where food insecurity is acuteand the fresh produce can go to good use.At the same time, the food bank drops offitems that Chege’s fellow farmers could use,like rice, cooking oil and flour, or vegetablesthat are not easily grown in the region, suchas squash or maize.All in all, agricultural recovery efforts like thisone make up more than 90 percent of FoodBanking Kenya’s sourcing, an approach thathelps reduce food waste and its contributionto greenhouse gas emissions, while alsoproviding nutritious food to people whoneed it. Eighty percent of the food bank’sdistributions go to children, with theremaining going to the elderly.Food Banking Kenya expanded itsability to store and transport produceby purchasing a refrigerated van,adding refrigeration to an existingvan, and adding a chest freezer to itswarehouse to store protein recoveredfrom retailers. It has also built a solardehydrator near their Kamae depotto dry out fresh produce, making iteasier to store and transport while stillretaining its nutrient density.
