Spotlight on:
Agricultural Recovery
In 2023, The Rockefeller Foundation granted $2.8 million to GFN
to address the cost-of-living crisis by finding innovative ways to
increase the recovery and distribution of wholesome, nutritious
foods and increase access for food-insecure communities in 10
countries: Colombia, Ecuador, Ghana, Guatemala, Honduras,
India, Kenya, Nigeria, Peru, and the Philippines. For the
food banks involved in this work, that often meant building
partnerships with small- and large-scale farmers—called
agricultural recovery programs—to collect surplus produce that
would otherwise go to waste and instead distribute it to people
facing hunger.
Building on the Rockefeller funding, GFN visited six of these
countries to develop case studies around the projects. These
were shared through a storytelling campaign, More Than Food,
which highlighted the importance and urgency of supporting
food banks in communities around the world.
The following pages include just a few examples of the many
stories told throughout our campaign that explore how food
banks are an often-unseen solution to reducing food loss and
waste and getting nutritious, fresh food to people facing hunger.
