emphasize reading and annotating to identify and track patterns, asking questions to
guide and deepen student insights and analyses, and developing individual insights into
and across texts. In the second semester, students focus on synthesizing observations
across texts and developing independently a functional notes system that prepares them
to generate a 20-30 page literary essay grounded in 7-10 sources. The year culminates
in an academic conference open to families, faculty, students, and guests with students
presenting their research and then publishing their papers, at least on a Field-designed
site. Our core novels include: The Bluest Eye, Sula, Song of Solomon, Tar Baby, and God
Help the Child.
