A
slow-rolling train rattled like old
bones along the tracks beside High
Street in Whitehouse Station, where tidy
post-war style houses and the relics of railway commerce lead to a gravelly dead-end
and the entrance to Haypress Cemetery.
Also known as the Whitehouse Old *Burial Grounds, and the Old Log Church
Cemetery, the grave yard derives its more
familiar name from a hay press that once
operated next door; a horse and pulley
contraption that hoisted a press weight
and dropped it from three-stories high to
compress hay bales for easier storage.
The churchyard was already an orphan
in 1881, when Snell9s History of Somerset
and Hunterdon Counties referred to it as
