clearing of forests, took its toll. By the early 20th century, beavers
had nearly vanished from New Jersey. In 1903, the New Jersey
Legislature banned beaver trapping. But that alone did not bring
about a recovery. In 1934, the state released nearly 1,500 beavers
obtained from the upper Midwest. That effort was a success as
beavers rebounded throughout New Jersey. Since 1970, the state
has had a limited winter trapping season.
