In the early 1920s, Corrado Feroci, later known as Professor Silpa Bhirasri, envisioned founding an advanced
European-style art school in Thailand. This vision came to fruition in 1933 with the establishment of the
School of Fine Arts under the Fine Arts Department. The school emphasized the study of both Western
and Thai art principles, combining theory and practice to train artists to serve the government. In
1935, the institution was renamed the Silpakorn School (Technical Department) to produce Thai artists
who would create art for the government and display their skills in state art competitions. In 1939,
Field Marshal Plaek Phibunsongkhram, the Prime Minister at the time, had the opportunity to view
the students9 work from the school at a fine arts competition during the Constitutional Celebration.
Impressed by what he saw, he later helped elevate the school9s status to Silpakorn University in 1943.
He appointed himself as the Chairman of the Board, with Phraya Anuman Rajadhon, the DirectorGeneral of the Fine Arts Department, serving as the Ex officio Director, and Professor Silpa Bhirasri as
the Dean of the Faculty of Painting and Sculpture. This crucial photograph captures a group on the
day of the first diploma ceremony for students of the Faculty of Painting and Sculpture, Silpakorn
University, Class 1, Academic Year 1943. The associate degree program required three years of study,
and students wishing to continue to a bachelor9s degree in Years 4 and 5 needed to achieve a score
of 70% or higher in Year 3. The photograph, likely taken in 1946 on the graduation ceremony day.
