When Professor Silpa Bhirasri envisioned establishing a European-style advanced
art school, he aimed to develop the Thai art industry by cultivating local talent,
thereby reducing reliance on foreign technicians. Upon successfully founding the
School of Fine Arts, which later became Silpakorn University, he demonstrated
his deep appreciation for traditional Thai art despite being a Westerner. This
appreciation was evident in the curriculum he designed, which integrated both
Western and traditional Thai art principles. Professor Bhirasri authored numerous
textbooks and writings on traditional Thai art, recognizing its unique beauty and
significance. In addition to his educational contributions, Professor Bhirasri left
behind valuable works of traditional Thai art, most notably the Phra Sri Sakya
Thosapalayan, the principal Buddha image at Phutthamonthon. This impressive
bronze statue stands 15.875 meters tall, depicting the Buddha taking a step
forward with his right foot, his right hand extended in a reassuring gesture, and
his left hand raised to chest level in a protective pose. This statue, inspired by
the Sukhothai period, reflects Professor Bhirasri9s admiration for the era9s artistry
and his ability to blend traditional Thai aesthetics with Western realism. His
Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej (King Rama IX) presided over the auspicious
ceremony of Phutthamonthon at the base of the Buddha image on July 29, 1955,
with construction commencing in 1957. This photograph was taken when Professor
Bhirasri displayed a prototype sculpture during the exhibition celebrating
the 25th Buddhist Century at Sanam Luang from May 12-18, 1957.
