Since Professor Silpa Bhirasri began working in Thailand, he
has created many invaluable works of art for the country.
These include artworks commissioned by the royal court,
the government, and various public entities. Additionally,
he has made significant contributions to the Thai art world
through both education and creativity. As a skilled sculptor,
Professor Bhirasri has also created important Buddhist
sculptures for the glorious creed of Buddhism, such as the
principal Buddha image at Phutthamonthon. One of his
notable works is the statue of Somdet Phra Buddhakosajarn
(Charoen Yannawa Thera, 1872-1951), who originally hailed
from Chonburi Province and began his monastic ordination
at Khao Bang Sai Temple in Mueang District, Chonburi.
Somdet Phra Buddhakosajarn held many crucial positions
in the governance of the Thai Sangha, including serving
as the abbot of Wat Debsirindrawas Ratchaworawihan,
before passing away on June 8, 1951. To venerate Somdet
Phra Buddhakosajarn, Professor Silpa Bhirasri modeled
a 5-inch lap-sized Buddha image, which the Fine Arts
Department then cast. This sculpture was created to
commemorate the royal cremation ceremony of Somdet
Phra Buddhakosajarn on June 8, 1951, at the Royal Cemetery,
Wat Debsirinthrawat Ratchaworawihan, where he had
served as the abbot. A total of 252 Buddha statues, including
Bhirasri9s sculpture, were built to be worshipped on this solemn
occasion, demonstrating the professor9s valuable artistic
contribution to honoring through his artistic endeavors.
