His Majesty King Vajiravudh (King Rama VI) continued
his father9s initiative by hiring many Western artisans to
work in architecture and fine arts in Siam. Towards the
end of his reign, the government sought a skilled sculptor
to undertake official duties and to train Thai people in
sculpture-making. On February 27, 1923, they selected
Corrado Feroci, a 32-year-old sculptor from Florence,
Italy, who had won first prize in the Siamese currency
design contest. Feroci signed a contract to work as a
sculptor for the Fine Arts Department. Feroci studied art
at the Accademia dell9 Arti Florentine, where he also
taught after graduating. He gained fame in Europe for his
many sculptures and monuments. Upon joining the Fine
Arts Department in Siam, Feroci had to learn and adapt
