Galileo Chini was one of the significant foreign artists who
contributed to the art scene in Siam. Born in Florence, Italy,
in 1873, Chini learned art from his uncle, a conservator of old
paintings. He later attended art school in Florence, worked
as an assistant to artists and designers, and eventually
became a freelance artist specializing in painting. Additionally,
he operated a porcelain and stained-glass factory, gaining
fame through his diverse artistic endeavors. When His
Majesty King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) traveled to Europe
for the second time in 1907, he visited the Venice Biennale
Art Festival and was greatly impressed by Chini9s historical
paintings, which blended classical European art with
atmospheric detail. Consequently, Chini was invited to
paint the decorations for the Ananta Samakhom Throne
Hall dome. Chini, accompanied by his assistant artists
Carlo Rigoli and Giovanni Sguanci, embarked on a cultural
exchange journey to Siam in 1911 during the reign of King
Rama VI. They undertook a monumental project that required
a deep dive into Siamese traditions to accurately
portray significant events and royal duties of the Chakri
Dynasty from King Rama I to King Rama VI. Chini9s work was
a testament to his profound understanding and respect
for Siamese culture, reflecting his dedication and meticulous
craftsmanship. Chini returned to Italy in 1913 and became
an expert in stained glass. In 1917, he was hired by the
Scalini family, an influential Italian political family closely
connected to the Senate. He became an interior designer
for the family9s luxurious villa, creating frescoes, furniture,
crockery, and exquisite stained-glass paintings, which were
displayed in this exhibition.
