This portrait of three royal children is a valuable work by Giuseppe Turchi, an
Italian artist. In 1860, Turchi graduated in art from the Accademia di San Luca
and created numerous works across Italy, including large oil paintings and
frescoes for religious sites. After moving to Rome in 1876, he met the Siamese
ambassador and was invited to work for the Siamese court, a significant
opportunity that led to him creating paintings to decorate the newly built
palace. This significant painting, marked by Turchi9s skilled craftsmanship,
features portraits of three royal children of His Majesty King Chulalongkorn and
Princess Saisavali Bhiromya Suddhasininat Piyamaharaj Padivaradda. The painting
includes HRH Prince Yugala Dighambara, Prince of Lopburi, HRH Princess
Malini Nobhadara, HRH Princess of Srisatchanalai, and Princess Nibha
Nobhadol, Princess of Uthong, while they were young. This artwork showcases
Turchi9s expertise and highlights the historical value of Western cultural
influence, reflected in the attire of the three royal children. Prince Yugala
Dighambara is depicted in a dark suit similar to a Western school uniform,
while the two royal daughters are shown in Western-style lace dresses.
Princess Nibha Nobhadol wears a dress with ruffles covering the upper arms,
and Princess Malini Nobhadara is dressed in a gown with puffed upper
sleeves, known as the Leg of Mutton Sleeve style. Although the painting9s
creation date is not indicated, it is believed to have been painted around
1895. This estimation is based on the hairstyle of Prince Malini, her brother,
who is shown with a topknot. During that era, boys had their topknots shaved
between the ages of 11 and 13, and girls around the age of 11. Since Princess
Malini Nobhadara was born in 1885, the painting likely dates to shortly
before her royal tonsure ceremony (Sokanta ceremony) when she was 11.
